Compare prices and pick the right size for your trip to Brasília–Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek Airport. Check availability and book an automatic car early for peak dates.
Why Automatic Cars Are Popular with UK Travellers
Automatic cars suit families and groups who prefer simple driving on unfamiliar roads. They reduce gear-change stress in busy city traffic.
Many UK drivers choose an automatic for short stays. It keeps journeys to hotels and attractions smooth and predictable. The airport serves both domestic and international flights. The terminal handles large passenger volumes.
What Types of Automatic Cars Are Available
At Brasília Airport you will find compact cars, small SUVs, family estate models, and 7 Seater or 8 Seater options from major brands. Availability depends on fleet sizes and season.
Compact automatics suit couples and city use. Medium SUVs suit small families and uneven roads. Large MPVs and 7 Seater cars are useful for groups and longer road trips.
| Feature | Automatic | Manual |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of use | High | Lower for unfamiliar drivers |
| City traffic | Better | More tiring |
| Fuel efficiency | Often similar | Can be better for some models |
| Availability in Brazil | Widely available | Very common |
This table shows practical differences to help you choose the right type for your trip.
Picking Up and Returning Your Rental Car
Most car hire desks are located inside or adjacent to the terminal building. Vehicles are commonly parked in dedicated sections of the main airport parking garage. Expect clear signage from arrivals to rental desks.
Allow 30 to 45 minutes to collect a vehicle during busy periods. For returns, follow the signs for rental returns and park in the company bay. Check opening hours. Some brands offer after-hours drop-off. Confirm this in advance.
| Item | Why It Matters | What to Look For |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel policy | Affects final cost | Full-to-full is clearest |
| Opening hours | Pick-up time flexibility | 24-hour desk avoids night surcharges |
| Vehicle location | Affects collection time | On-site garage is fastest |
Check the booking voucher for directions. Take time to inspect the car for dents and record them on the handover sheet.
Documents Needed for Automatic Car Hire
UK drivers must present a valid driving licence. An international driving permit is not always required for short stays. Some companies ask to see a passport and a credit card in the lead driver’s name.
Confirm licence rules with your chosen company when booking. Car hire firms may have extra ID checks for non-Brazilian documents. Keep printed or digital copies of all confirmations.
Tips for Driving Abroad
Brasília airport sits outside the Plano Piloto area. Typical travel time to the central government area is 15 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic. Expect 15 kilometres or so by car between the airport and central Brasília. Allow extra time during peak traffic.
Roads around Brasília include fast dual carriageways and local arterial routes. Watch for busy junctions near the Eixo Monumental during events. Local authorities sometimes change lanes for major events. Check traffic notices before long drives.
- Keep right-hand driving conventions in mind.
- Use official parking and avoid stopping on carriageways.
- Use a toll payment method if your route includes toll roads.
| Extra | Typical Cost | Can It Be Avoided? |
|---|---|---|
| Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) | Moderate to high | Sometimes declined by using own cover |
| Additional driver | Small daily fee | Often avoidable by single driver |
| Child seat | Small daily fee | Bring your own to avoid cost |
| Fuel charges | Varies by policy | Choose full-to-full to avoid extras |
These are common extra charges. Read terms carefully when you book to avoid surprises.
Extra Costs to Watch Out For
Airport collection taxes and local fees may appear on the booking summary. On-site parking at Brasília Airport is managed and there are also off-site economy lots with shuttle links. Off-site lots often cost less but allow more pickup time.
Cross-border travel incurs restrictions and higher excess fees. Check the rental terms if you plan to drive outside the Federal District.
Final Advice Before Booking
Book automatic cars well ahead for Carnival and holiday weeks. Demand rises in school holiday periods and during the rainy season, when families book larger vehicles. The wet season runs roughly from October to March. Expect daily afternoon storms then and allow extra time for airport queues.
Choose an automatic that matches passenger and luggage needs. Confirm collection details and read the fuel policy. This will keep arrivals and departures simple for groups and families.
